My husband builds high quality violins, violas and a five-string combination instrument in his shop at Veritable Violins LLC. These musical instruments are fragile because they are made from very thin, delicate pieces of specially cut wood called “tonewood”. During the process of making an instrument, this delicate wood can crack, warp or reveal deals sap pockets and other flaws rendering it unusable for a high quality instrument. But all is not lost! These beautiful and expensive pieces of wood make excellent canvases for art work. Therefore I rescue these unfinished instrument pieces and use traditional wood burning techniques to create an image on the wood. I may also apply various types of paint or other decorations. My husband then finishes the wood using his traditional violin finishing techniques.
Warning... The insides of even the highest quality violins and violas are not finished. If you could see inside your instrument, you would find tool marks, gouges, wood patches, glue stains and the maker's handwritten notes. Thus the unfinished sides of these art pieces are similarly not beautiful. However, I have applied felt strips to the back of each piece to prevent the wood from leaving any marks on your wall. I have also added notes to tell you the type of wood and why it did not make the grade into a high quality violin or viola.
These art pieces are meant to be hung on the wall and thus the name “wallhangers”. Each has a hanger of some type and I plan to include a wall hook for your convenience.
These wallhangers are unusual, untraditional and handmade right here in our Colorado workshop. We hope you enjoy them and will consider one as a gift to a violinist, a viola player, musician, music teacher or any music lover.
