Deals Very big vintage glazed terracotta pitcher dating from the 1950s, Grottaglie (Apulia, Italy)

This pitcher is called “quartarone” in the local dialect (“grottagliese”). The term comes from “quarto”, meaning “the fourth”, that is the fourth part of a barrel. It was used for containing water and, first of all, wine. In taverns, cellar men used to pour wine from the “Capasone” (very big deals jar) right onto the “quartarone”.
It is perfectly preserved so in addition to being able to be a decorative display, it can be used for stirring water or wine on your table!
It features the classic manganese-colored glaze with stripes and drippings, but especially the curious decoration reproducing the eyes of the wives who reminded their husbands not to overdo the Bacco nectar!

Imperfections and wear are distinguishing signs of authenticity.
