Batik Cotton Sarong Fabric Fully Handmade Indonesian Batik Kain Tulis from Madura Indonesia Batik deals Hand Drawn

An old batik sarong from Madura, a large island to the north of eastern Java. Tulis is the Indonesian word deals used to describe a batik that is totally handmade by "kanting" (pouring) the wax onto the material. It is not made by stamp or by mechanically printing onto the material. This is the traditional and most labour intensive way of making a batik.

This batik has a brwon and white background with a pattern of stylised fish and other sea life in red, blue and dark brown. It is on good soft cotton and in very good condition and shows a high level of competence with well drawn thin wavering lines close together.

A Sarong is made by taking a long piece of batik and sewing the two short edges together to form a tube. Mostly made for use by women. This one is 104cm high by 192cm long (if opened up).
