RARE Battle of Manilla Bay Commodore Dewey U.S. Flagship deals Olympia Commemorative Vintage Sterling Spoon

Here we have for you a very hard-to-find and highly collectible sterling souvenir spoon commemorating the Battle of Manila Bay and Commodore George Dewey. There isn't one quite like it to be had. The bowl of the spoon features a rendering of the USS OLYMPIA and says 'MANILLA MAY 1ST 98' above and 'OLYMPIA - DEWEY' below. Really beautiful craftsmanship here on this small size bowl.
The finial is a lovely, embossed rendering of the US flag with very nice detail work running down the handle stem. The rear of the stem is stamped 'STERLING'.

A little history...
On February 25, 1898, just 10 days after the USS MAINE was destroyed in the harbor of Havana and a few months before formal fighting ensued, the US Asiatic Squadron -- under Commodore George Dewey -- was placed on alert and ordered to Hong Kong. After the United States declared war on April 25, Dewey was ordered to “capture or destroy the Spanish fleet” which was in Philippine waters at the time. On April 27, Dewey gathered his fleet (of which the USS OLYMPIA was his flagship) at Mirs Bay, northeast of Hong Kong. They arrived in the Philippines three days later.
In the Battle of Manila Bay (May 1, 1898), the US Navy defeated the Spanish Pacific fleet. This resulted in the fall of the Philippines and contributed to the final US victory in the Spanish-American War. This resounding success made Commodore Dewey a national hero and helped establish the reputation of the United States as a major naval power.
After many more years of service, USS OLYMPIA was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. In January of 1996, the vessel was transferred to the Independence Seaport Museum for upkeep, restoration and ongoing maintenance. The USS OLYMPIA is permanently docked at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia and is open for public viewing. It is the only American warship from the Spanish American War still in existence, and one of only four warships representative of the time period that exist worldwide.

The spoon is in vintage condition with some light signs of wear, as seen in the photos. It measures 3.5" in length.
