From the dust jacket: "This book, the publisher hopes, will serve mankind in several ways. It may be perused with quiet enjoyment by the fireside, when the cat has been put out and the family has been tucked in bed. Parts of it may be safely read aloud in select circles during that deadly pause when talk runs out and guests get restless. Here is not merely a compilation of cocktail recipes but a wise and witty discussion of the philosophy of drinking, of the arts of sociability and conviviality, and a picture of the fads, fanciers and foibles of many famous contemporaries."
