Pair of early 1900’s Botanical Prints, Hand Colored deals

deals Here are a lovely pair of botanical prints made around 1900…both hand water colored. The flowers are not any I have personally known of which makes them very interesting to me.

They are done in a style of The Age of Discovery (15th - 18th centuries). During this time artists traveled with explorers and scientists to new lands where they
collected evidence of ‘new' plants and flowers. Records were
made on their travels and on their return of the botanical
material that was collected.

These are in their original gilt frames. I believe these may be what is called lemon gilded. There is always a demand for antique “lemon gold” frames. These are sought after for framing antique artwork. These frames are almost always “silver gilt”, meaning the leafing is done with silver, and the color obtained by use of tinted finishes. The black markings often seen on antique frames occurs when this surface finish is damaged, allowing the silver beneath the finish to blacken, as is seen in these two examples.
