St Sebastian Portrait 12" x 16" Queer Art Male Study

The thing I always found so interesting about St Sebastian is the consistently erotic way in which he's been represented throughout history. He is repeatedly shown as a very muscular and healthy young man who appears rather turned on by the events unfolding around him...his execution. I like working with religious themes as well as social and sexual situations, so a few years ago I started sketching out deals this concept. I wanted to maintain the brutality of the story as well as highlight the sexual aspect seen in previous versions.

I started by putting down a grey/beige/gold background of acrylic washes on a 12" x 16" canvas. I adhered biblical passages to various sections of the painting and coated them in acrylic washes as well. The final steps were the spraying of Sebastian and the birds in red and black and coloring in the arrows. Canvas size is 12" x 16".
