This original early 20th century etching, "Tempest", by Donald Shaw Maclaughlan (Canadian/American, 1876-1938), is plate signed and dated (1913), and pencil signed by the artist. It is in excellent gallery condition. Tempest is in the collections of many major museums including Smithsonian's American Arts Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Maclaughlan is regarded as one of America's finest etchers of the early twentieth century (but he was born and raised in Prince Edward Island). He moved with his family to Boston in 1890. MacLaughlan first studied art in Boston under J. W. O. Hamilton. In 1898 he settled in Paris to complete his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. MacLaughlan soon established himself as a major international artist. In 1901 two of his etchings were accepted by the prestigious Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1903 he was elected an Associate of the Salon.
