1800’s- PA GERMAN child's ABC book -'Hoch-Deutsches Reformirtes A B C deals und Namen-Büchlein, für Kinder welche anfangen zu lernen' -see below

The title translates thus: "High German Reformed A B C and Name Booklet, for Children who are starting to learn."

This book measures 4 1/2 x 7 inches and has 35 pages including the front cover to the inside of the back cover (their numbering). Published " Bei Schaefer & Koradi, Buchhandlung, southwest corner Fourth and Wood Streets in Philadelphia, and printed by "Stereotypirt von J. Howe, Philadelphia".

Not dated but the following site gives the date at this address as 1851-1878. Another reference gives the dates as between 1860 and 1880. The title page says "New and Improved Edition ("Neue und verbesserte Ausgabe"). On the page that is inside the back cover it says "1832" which could be the date of this edition before it was 'improved'.

It has wood block prints.

"The firm Schäfer und Koradi deals was established in July 1851. Schäfer und Koradi was located at Fourth and Wood St. from 1852 until 1879, when the firm moved to 314 York Ave. Ernest Karl Schäfer died in 1878. Rudolf Koradi ran the business until his death in 1908, when Walter R. Schäfer took it over. See Robert E. Cazden, Social history of the German book trade in America (1984), p. 734, and Philadelphia city directories through 1881. Two impressions noted. In this impression the pages are numbered. Wood-engraved illustrations on covers marked "Gilbert" (i.e., George Gilbert?)."
